COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo — The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will assist students, faculty, staff and community members affected by the Black Forest and Royal Gorge wildfires.
On a case-by-case basis, UCCS will assist university and Colorado Springs community members in need, Susan Szpyrka, vice chancellor, Administration and Finance, said. Assistance may include temporary housing in campus residence halls, storage for vehicles, or assistance with summer classes for students who are affected by the fire.
Those seeking assistance should contact the UCCS Office of Emergency Management, 255-3106, and should be prepared to show identification that indicates they are in an evacuation, pre-evacuation area or are directly affected.
“UCCS is a community university,” Brian Burnett, executive vice chancellor, Administration and Finance, said. “That means we’re ready to help when our community needs us.” Faculty and staff affected by the fires should work with supervisors about using personal leave time to assist with evacuation efforts
After the Black Forest fire erupted June 11, UCCS sent three police officers to assist El Paso County officials. Two officers and a motorcycle officer assisted with evacuations of homes in the area. UCCS Police will continue to assist El Paso County as requested.
The Black Forest area of El Paso County is about 10 miles from the UCCS campus. The campus is not in danger and all scheduled activities will continue. Faculty, staff, students and campus visitors are asked to be vigilant in preventing fire. Smoking on campus is discouraged and campus community members are encouraged to watch for smoke on campus property. All sightings should be reported to UCCS Public Safety, 255-3111, immediately.
