COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – After a successful pilot, UCCS radio will broadcast remaining UCCS men’s and women’s basketball games as well as Saturday softball games online at http://radio.uccs.edu.
In a collaborative effort, Jared Verner, assistant director for sports information, Athletics, worked closely with Brandon Ortega, station manager, UCCS Radio, to increase exposure of the athletic program by broadcasting the school’s sporting events.
“The UCCS Athletic Department is excited to partner with UCCS Radio in this endeavor,” said Verner, who also helped oversee the launch of “The Lion’s Den!,” a popular sports program on UCCS Radio. “We’re looking forward to expanding our product and providing another medium for families, friends, and fans to follow the Mountain Lions throughout the upcoming seasons.”
The partnership transpired during a time of growth for both the university’s athletic department and radio station. While UCCS Athletics achieved unprecedented success on and off the field of play recently, UCCS Radio restructured its programming and added a record number of new programs, which has made it more diversified.
“My number one priority when I took over UCCS Radio was to provide our listeners with quality programming that those in the UCCS community wanted to listen to and sports has been a big part of that,” said Ortega, who was hired as station manager in December. “It was not a hard decision to add UCCS sports into the mix when you consider how successful they have been for the past few years.”
About the Station
UCCS Radio started in 2003 as a project undertaken by the UCCS Chapter of the ACM, the Computer Science Professional Association. The establishment of the radio station was made possible by a generous grant by the UCCS Technology Fee Committee.
In 2005, the UCCS Internet Radio Station became an official organization within the College of Letters, Arts and Sciences. The Internet Radio Station has an associated Student Club which performs many of the activities needed for day-to-day running. UCCS Internet Radio accepts proposals for new shows from students, alumni, staff, faculty and community members. Most proposals are accepted.
